Air France's Baggage Policy: Everything You Need to Know

Are you getting ready to fly with Air France? Before you pack your bags and head to the airport, make sure you understand the airline's baggage policy. From air france baggage allowance to fees for checked and carry-on items, here's everything you need to know about Air France baggage policy.

General Policies

Air France has a few general baggage policies that you need to be aware of before you start packing for your trip. The most important policy is the carry-on luggage restriction, which states that all passengers are allowed one bag and one personal item per passenger. All bags must fit within the maximum size requirements, which are 55 x 35 x 25 cm / 21.5 x 13.7 x 9.8 inches (length x width x height). Passengers are also allowed to bring a laptop, an umbrella, and a coat or blanket onboard as part of their carry-on luggage. If you exceed the allowance for carry-on luggage, you will be required to check your excess items and pay a fee for them.

When it comes to checked luggage, the air france baggage policy states that passengers are allowed two bags, with a maximum weight limit of 23 kg (50 lbs) per bag. Anything over this weight will require you to pay an additional fee. Additionally, the total dimensions of both checked bags combined must not exceed 158 cm (62 in). If you have any special items such as sporting equipment or musical instruments, you should contact Air France in advance to inquire about their special item policies. Lastly, there may be extra fees associated with oversized, overweight, and excess luggage, so make sure you know the details before you book your flight.

Carry-On Luggage

Air France allows passengers to bring one piece of carry-on luggage as well as one personal item (e.g. a handbag, laptop bag or briefcase) on board with them. The maximum dimensions for the carry-on bag are 55cm x 35cm x 25cm including handles, wheels and other external projections. The maximum weight limit for the carry-on bag is 12kg. Passengers travelling in Business Class or La Première can bring two pieces of carry-on luggage; one must fit within the above dimensions, and the other may not exceed 45cm x 20cm x 35cm and weigh no more than 10kg. These items must be placed either in the overhead compartments or under the seat in front of you, and should not block any of the aisles. Additionally, each passenger is allowed to bring one item of personal shopping aboard, but this must fit within the Air France baggage policy guidelines of being light and not taking up extra space.

Checked Luggage

When travelling with Air France, passengers can check up to three pieces of baggage, with each piece not exceeding 158 cm (62 in) in total dimensions. The maximum combined weight allowed for all checked luggage is up to 32kg (70 lbs) per passenger, depending on the air france baggage policy associated with your flight.

Passengers flying Economy Light will be limited to one bag at a maximum weight of 23kg (50 lbs). Economy Classic and Flex tickets are eligible for two bags up to 23kg (50 lbs) each and one extra bag up to 32kg (70 lbs). Business Class tickets come with three bags up to 32 kg (70 lbs) each.

Any items larger than the size or weight limitations will incur an excess baggage fee. It’s important to note that additional fees may apply if any of your bags are heavier than 23kg (50 lbs). Be sure to check the air france baggage policy before travelling to avoid any additional charges.

Excess, Oversized, and Overweight Luggage

If you have more items than are permitted by Air France’s baggage policy, you may be subject to additional fees. This includes luggage that is oversized or overweight. Here’s what you need to know:

Excess Baggage: Passengers on Air France flights may check up to three pieces of luggage (including cabin baggage) per person. If you check more than three pieces, you will incur an excess baggage fee.

Oversized Baggage: Baggage on Air France flights must not exceed 158 cm in total dimensions. That includes length, width, and height. If any piece of your luggage exceeds this limit, you will be charged an oversize fee.

Overweight Baggage: Your checked baggage must not exceed 23 kg for Economy Class passengers or 32 kg for Business Class passengers. Anything over these limits will incur an overweight fee.

It is important to review Air France’s baggage policy before you fly to ensure that all of your items comply with the requirements. Doing so can help you avoid unnecessary charges at the airport. For added convenience, Air France allows you to purchase extra baggage allowance online prior to your flight. Simply log into your account and select the “Purchase Extra Baggage Allowance” option from the “My Profile & Preferences” page. Additionally, Air France offers services such as Priority Handling and Express Delivery if you need assistance with transportation of special or bulky items such as skis, surfboards, bicycles, and pet carriers. When travelling with a pet, it is recommended that you consult Air France’s specific rules regarding pet transportation to ensure compliance with their air france baggage policy. Be aware that there may be certain restrictions depending on where you are travelling to. Finally, when packing your bags it’s important to remember that Air France prohibits dangerous goods such as aerosols and lighters from being transported as checked or carry-on baggage. These items should be placed in your checked luggage to adhere to Air France’s air france baggage policy.

Special Items

Air France allows customers to bring certain special items onto the plane and in their checked luggage, depending on the air france baggage policy. This includes items such as musical instruments, pets, and sporting equipment.

Musical Instruments: If you plan on bringing a musical instrument onto the plane, make sure it is small enough to fit into the overhead compartments or underneath the seat in front of you. You can also check larger instruments with your luggage, as long as they are properly packaged.

Pets: Air France allows customers to travel with pets in the cabin and checked baggage, but there are specific requirements that must be met. All animals must be transported in an approved carrier and have the necessary health certificates and vaccinations.

Sporting Equipment: Bikes, golf clubs, skis, and snowboards are allowed in checked luggage as long as they are properly packaged and not too large or bulky. All items must meet the airline's size and weight restrictions for air france baggage policy.
